    Green Eggs and Ham

We have all had those moments when hunger pangs hit you suddenly and you find yourself pacing around the kitchen looking for anything even remotely edible to fill the sudden hole in your stomach. Luckily, today on L&A, we’d like to share with you a current favourite recipe that can be prepped, cooked and eaten within 5 minutes. That’s right, a delicious hot meal in about the same time it takes to make a bowl of cereal (at least how long it takes me to make cereal when I’m stumbling around the house blurry eyed at 6am). Introducing the wonder that is… Pesto Pancakes! They may not be the most…

    Homemade Ice Lollies

Apparently they are called lolly ices in Liverpool… they do everything backwards it seems… I have been eating a LOT of ice cream. In my defence, it is really hot here. And I love ice cream – in fact it’s my favourite thing ever. Plus I’m now an adult and I am old enough to make my own decisions as my dad always says… but still, even I know that 8 ice creams a day isn’t very good for me. Ahem. So in a plea to myself to be a little more healthy, I have been making ice lollies! If you need something quick and refreshing that is actually good…

Our 100th blog post is: How to make Strawberry Jam

We’re jamming, we’re jamming, we’re jamming… Yup, we’re jamming again. This time we got 6 punnets of strawberries for a bargain five euro. In Japan you wouldn’t get a single punnet for that price, so we stood next to the market stall figuring out if making strawberry jam would be easy and then we dove in quickly. You will need: 1kg strawberries 500g pectin sugar 2 limes Looking back and taking into consideration the fruits were bought at a market, we should have started preparing the jam the second we got home. But it was the weekend and we had so many plans… so when I looked in the bags…

    Flapjack

Ah brown sugar how come you taste so good… We have been invited to a potluck monthly gathering. Apparently everyone brings a dish of their choice and the crowd is very multicultural, so people try and bring something from their own country. We had been told the kitchen is always a busy place and so if we could bring something that didn’t require an oven or microwave it would be highly appreciated. I thought of my sweet teeth (all 28 of them) and decided scones were the way forward. But as it’s not just me (Jason will also be going), we need two dishes. And what better dessert to accompany…

    Pomegranate Vodka

I’d like to tell a story and every word is true. It’s all about a substance, a very special brew. It’s not Guinness or Budweiser, Bemish or Murphy’s Stout But if you take a drop too much, it’s sure to knock you out. Oh they drink it in Siberia, it’s dignified and smart. It’s not like auld gassy beer, it won’t make you belch or fart. It keeps the Russians warm where they seldom see the sun. There’s nothing like a vodka boy, a vodka is the one. This is a labour of love, as you will not be able to drink the vodka for at least a week BUT…

    Christmas Cookie Time!

Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree… No Christmas would be complete without Christmas biscuits. We made a lot of them and here is what we did: You will need: 100g sugar 100g butter 275g flour 1 egg You put everything into a bowl and mix like crazy. Then my trick is to put the mixture into the fridge for half an hour to cool it down, as when you touch the mixture you are warming it up and this makes it sticky and hard to use. Next, put flour on your hands, the rolling pin and the surface you are going to put the mixture on and roll out the…

    Butternut Soup

Food, glorious food… So, it’s autumn in Berlin and that means great food is in season: the pumpkin. I have never in my life seen so many weird and wonderful looking squashes. They are enormous. Plus, it’s cold now. And the only good thing about the cold is that it is mandatory to eat soup. All the time. For every meal. That’s right, isn’t it? So, as half of the world is now getting colder, I thought it would only be fair to share my favourite soup with you all. It is of the pumpkin variety. Please enjoy! You will need: 1 butternut squash 1 onion 1 can of corn…

    Yakisoba

Cooking up something good… I’m a quivering emotional wreck when it comes to cutting onions, however today I tried it with my glasses on to a much higher success rate. My eyes are stinging, but there was no use for tissues… I recommend wearing spectacles of some sort if you suffer from the same problem. Anyway, to making the food! Yakisoba means fried noodles in Japanese. Popular as a fast food dish, here is how to do it: You will need: 2 onions ¼ cabbage 2 packets of yakisoba noodles Whatever else you happen to have. This is a great dish to use up leftovers. We had a load of…

    Happy Birthday Cheesecake

Happy birthday to you… Today our lovely friends from home arrived and yesterday was Kayleigh’s birthday. Perfect timing to make my favourite cake in the world. I got the recipe from my German aunt and although it didn’t go perfectly, it tasted amazing. You will need: The base: 150g biscuits 60g butter 1 egg white The cheese mixture: 8 gelatin leaves 1 lemon (juice) 2 packets vanilla sugar ½l Dickmilch/ Buttermilk (or 3 pots yoghurt) 150g sugar ½l double cream (whipped) 1 can peaches (optional) The Topping: ¼l fruit juice 6 gelatin leaves 26cms cake form Start by melting the butter in a sauce pan over a very low heat.…

    Tomato Chutney

You say tomato… I’m still amazed that I have not made chutney before. I had my first ever curry aged just two weeks old (one of my father’s proudest moments). Curry is my absolute favourite food. And nothing goes better with poppadoms than a load of mango chutney. So when we managed to get over 1kg of tomatoes for less than £1, we thought it would be rude not to make something with it. And this is what we did:  You will need: 1kg tomatoes 500g red onions 3 garlic cloves 1 red chilli 250g brown sugar 140ml balsamic vinegar Chop everything as small as you can and place it…
