Rebecca Culverhouse – British Filmmaker in Berlin

Rebecca just completed her latest short film Shizuka. L&A grabbed her for a quick interview. Here is her story: Rebecca Culverhouse is a nomadic British filmmaker who has made films in Japan, the UK and Germany. Currently based in Berlin, she is writing the script for her first feature film, which is based on a short Japanese drama shot in the Tohoku area before the great earthquake of 2011. L&A: What kind of films do you make? As a freelance filmmaker I do a lot of promo videos for music festivals, start ups, and artists. Although each video has a completely different brief, I always like to add a warm…

    Monkey-ing around

Ten little monkeys, jumping on the bed… There is a new massive shopping centre that opened its doors this month. Confusingly, it’s called Bikini, but it sells all kinds of things inside – not only swimwear. It’s only five minutes away from UNIQLO and we went there during my lunch break today to have a look at the monkeys. Yup, that’s right – monkeys! Bikini is right next door to the zoo. So instead of paying a lot of money for entrance to see the animals, you can walk onto the rooftop of the shopping centre and look over the balcony. You can see the monkeys from here and if…

Happy Monday – Board Game Geek

Happy Monday folks! To dispel the impression that all of our Happy Monday posts are about food (or even the majority of our regular posts as a matter of fact), today I’d like to introduce you to one of my favourite websites. Boardgamegeek I like to believe the site was named after me but their little mascot sadly bears no resemblance PLUS he’s carrying a chess board when I would be carrying a Go board, but I digress… This site is a fantastic resource for anything to do with board games – it has an immense database of games and each game has a wealth of information attached to it.…

    Have Cookies, Will Click.

It’s cookie madness in the L&A house this Sunday. We have just stumbled across a site called Cookie Clicker which is probably THE most pointless, yet addictive thing ever. Just like a real cookie perhaps? The idea is simple, you just open up the site and start clicking the cookie. You collect cookies for every click and with those cookies, you can buy things that will help you click for more cookies. And the cycle continues. You can buy little pointers (see above) that poke the cookie every 15 seconds. You can recruit an army of little grandmas to help you get that freshly baked yumminess. You can even get…

    Working with Dog.

We have travelled with dog so the next natural step would be to work with dog. Sadly, we don’t have a dog (yet!) to bring with us to work but I was greatly surprised by how common it is in Germany to bring your pooch to the workplace. A good friend of ours in Berlin takes his dog to work every day and he, in his words, rolls up “like a cinnamon bun” and relaxes all day. The dog, not him. As a huge dog fan, I’m really impressed that most workplaces in Germany have such dog-friendly policies. As long as you have the approval of your surrounding colleagues and…

    I can't help myself

It’s got to beeeeeee… perfect! Another post about Magnum. I think maybe I should be getting paid by them at this rate – but this one is amaze! I love the name Infinity… and wish the ice cream would go on for infinity… hehe! Is anyone else out there as obsessed with ice cream as I am? I got a little confused over Easter and went mad eating ice cream… then I realised my mistake and started scoffing chocolate – yummy!

    Green fingers

Once upon a time… So, the sun has been beaming down on Berlin for months. I have to say, the weather here is so much better than at home. It definitely rains more here, but it seems to soak the earth like crazy during the night when I’m fast asleep anyway, and there is none of that irritating drizzle. I have an umbrella but I have only carried it in my bag once during the entire 8 months we have been here – crazy! So with this in mind, I thought it was time to try my luck with gardening. I guess I’m hoping that my mother’s green fingers were…

Backgammon – My Favourite Way to Play

Hey folks! As most people who have spent more than a minute with me in the last few years will know, I have a huge nerdy soft spot in my heart for board games. I’m going to be writing about some of my favourite games over the coming weeks and months as it is something I would love to share with everyone (and maybe get some more people to play games with!) Today I’m going to take a little look at Backgammon. It is one of the oldest known boardgames in existence (on Earth at least…) and the game is a lot of fun to play. Despite the heavy luck…

    We are going up!!

We are Brentford, super Brentford, super Bees… Happy Monday today is a quick update for those of you who missed the magical news! Brentford Football Club have received automatical promotion!! YEY!!!! Finally we are on the way up to the Championship League for the 2014/15 season. As kids, I supported Newcastle as I was born there and my brother Mark chose Manchester United, purely because they were the best. Luckily he soon righted his ways and we both decided to support our local club Brentford (the super Bees). The supporters really are fans from the bottom of their hearts. I remember watching the Bees play at Wembley many many years…
