Pomegranate Vodka

I’d like to tell a story and every word is true.
It’s all about a substance, a very special brew.
It’s not Guinness or Budweiser, Bemish or Murphy’s Stout
But if you take a drop too much, it’s sure to knock you out.
Oh they drink it in Siberia, it’s dignified and smart.
It’s not like auld gassy beer, it won’t make you belch or fart.
It keeps the Russians warm where they seldom see the sun.
There’s nothing like a vodka boy, a vodka is the one.
photoThis is a labour of love, as you will not be able to drink the vodka for at least a week BUT it is very simple to make and actually makes vodka taste nice…
Okay, so quick and easy:
You will need:
1 large pomegranate
700ml vodka
200g caster sugar
200ml water
First you will need to de-seed the pomegranate. It’s fiddly work and do wear either black clothing or an apron as it will stain your clothes. The way I do it (I learnt this in Israel where pomegranates are HUGE and people eat them all the time:) is to cut the fruit in quarters and put the whole thing into a bowl of water. This makes it less messy and it seems to make it easier to get the seeds off. Put these in a sterilised jar and add the cheapest vodka you can find.
photo2Melt the sugar in a pan with the water and let it bubble for a few minutes. Then let it cool a little and add the mixture into the vodka jar. Mix it a lot and then hide it in a cupboard for a week while it does its own thing, except when you are giving it a daily shake.
When the week is up, strain the pomegranate seeds off. One or two days before you plan on drinking it, add fresh seeds to make it look pretty. It will keep for 6 months (do give it a shake once a week though). Cheers, or as they say in Russia: ypa!
