All good things come to an end

When you wish upon a star… So, it’s my final day at work. It has been such an amazing experience. I remember my dream as a child was to be a popstar. At two years old I was often found dancing and singing to Tina Turner. When I grew up a bit more, I realised it was actually quite hard to be a popstar. As a backup plan I decided I could be a newsreader. It seems that is a job even harder to get. However, during my tenure working for a Japanese broadcaster as a News Producer over the past few years I had the occasional chance of being…

    Once a Berliner, always a Berliner…

D’oh… nut… mmmmmmm, doughnut… Exactly 50 years ago today, John F Kennedy made his famous speech that included the phrase “ich bin ein Berliner”. It still makes me giggle now – imagining a President standing up in front of a huge audience saying that he is in fact a doughnut. You couldn’t have made it up! I have to say I can’t wait to be a Berliner. Two more days at work and then freedom. It’s always sad to leave a job you love and my colleagues are amazing. I could not have wished for a better team of people to work with and train me on my journey into…

    Home sweet Home

Our house, in the middle of our street… I feel it’s time I told you about the background to the decision to move to Berlin. In September 2012 a group of friends from America, Sweden and the UK met up in Berlin. We partied, walked for miles and discovered together what an amazing city Berlin is. I had been there as a child but I didn’t really remember anything. I didn’t want to leave. After a life of extensive travelling abroad, this was the first place I had been to in which I felt this pull, this energy, this longing to stay and not go home. I wanted more. I…

    Schrödinger's Mouse

Herby has been caught. After Vanessa went out to buy a more traditional mouse trap, he ultimately chose the original box trap. Once a mouse enters, the door to the trap seals itself once and a little red flag rises like the American post boxes do when there are letters waiting inside. We were sat in the garden taking advantage of the rare appearance of sunny weather, eating an ice cream (Vanessa edit: White chocolate ice cream!) when it happened. I heard a noise from back in the house and found the trap activated when I went back inside. We had two box traps set up, one filled with nutella…

It continues to squeak in the night

I just haven’t met you yet… I would like to apologise in advance. This may not be a post enjoyed by all… and it may be a post that leads to animal cruelty. Before I begin I would like to say I don’t even hurt insects. I put spiders and flies etc into a glass and pop them outside so that they can continue their journey, putting a pane of glass between us for my sanity. I also move snails and slugs from my garden, instead of removing them from existence. And that is why I’m not overly happy about what I am going to tell you, but it seems…

    Egg-cellent

And I said what about Breakfast at Tiffany’s? Life this year has been work work work. And then a bit of work besides. It’s been really tough. I have missed two weddings, one hen party, countless evenings with friends and expensive concert tickets. I can’t even remember the last time I was awake enough to have breakfast. My days involve sleepily dashing to work and snacking on some old bread or a bit of cake. I need a break. My body needs a break before it actually breaks and that was what our practice week in Berlin was all about: great amounts of sleep and balcony breakfasts. And it was…

It goes squeak in the night

Three blind mice, three blind mice. See how they run… The evidence was found in the morning. A small piece of green tea cake wrapped up in plastic has been nibbled at three corners and the cake had obviously been enjoyed immensely. This time however the attack had come at the top of the stairs. To bring you up to speed: Herbert (Herby for short) was first spotted about a month ago. Jason was calmly watching TV when a black dot scarpered across the living room floor well past bedtime. Thinking it was an enormous and fast spider, he proceeded to vacuum the room like a crazed man. However, to…

Berlin grows on me… Part Two

Piggybacking shamelessly on Vanessa’s previous post, I thought I would take the opportunity to present a few of my initial impressions and things I learnt about Berlin from the wonderful trial week we spent there. Firstly, I would have to say that the title of this post is probably a bit misleading as Berlin didn’t need any opportunity to grow on me. I think I enjoyed the city from the very first moment I first arrived. Spending a week sampling life there and managing to discover only a tiny fraction of possibilities Berlin has to offer left me feeling very reluctant to board a plane and leave.  For me, Berlin…
