    Happy Monday – warm feet!

The look… of love… Someone obviously had a little bit of love to give to this letterbox in Berlin. It’s the cutest thing we have seen here! And if you use your imagination a little bit, it almost looks like the box is smiling as it has nice warm feet now! 🙂

Barcomis is more than just cheesecake

Tasty morcels… I know, I know… I am trying to give you all ideas for places to eat whilst in Berlin and it shouldn’t all be just about cheesecake. So here is a post about some food that ends in cheesecake. Ahem. So we have been to Barcomis many many times. We blogged about their cheesecake here. I can’t even tell you how times we have eaten it, as I have lost count. When you find that perfect cake and lovely cafe with service that is actually nice (normally impossible to find here in Berlin), you just keep going again and again. Bizarrely however, we only even went for cheesecake…

The Memorial to Homosexuals Persecuted Under Nazism

Lest we forget… History is all around us. In Berlin I find it is always pushed into my face. What is left of the Berlin Wall, the memorials littered around the city, books, magazines, museums, photos, people’s conversations… You don’t need to look far to be reminded of the past. This is particularly so in the area around the Brandenburger Gate. Today I will tell you about one of the many memorials and soon you will hear about more. This one is the smallest I have come across and it’s easily overlooked. You wouldn’t even really know it was there unless you were walking in the park and thought it…

Things you won't hear Berliners say.

This is an amazing, and incredibly accurate, example of things you will never hear spoken in Berlin which made me giggle this morning. The list was published by The Hundert after collating contributions from this facebook group. Some of my favourites include: – “Echt? Also meine Nachbarn sind alle Normal!” (Really, but all my neighbours are normal! …See our earlier post about our lovely neighbour for case in point!) -“Ich muss gehen. Muss Morgen früh leider raus” (I’ve got to go, I have to be out early in the morning) and – “Was hier im Kiez noch fehlt ist ein Bioladen!” (All that’s missing here in this area is an…

    Graffiti in Berlin

I’ll be watching you… It’s literally everywhere. On every wall, street, lamppost, brick, door… no where is safe. And so it was high time that L&A went to find out more about the art form that is covering the streets of Berlin. Our tour guide was Liam from Australia. Like us, he travelled to Berlin, fell in love with the city and is still here five years later. What we learnt: Street art is illegal. You can get fined and very occasionally put into prison. However, to get around this, many local artists have found clever new ways of stopping themselves getting caught. For example, instead of spraying directly onto…

    Happy St Patrick's Day!!

I’ve been a wild rover… Okay, okay, I know it’s all over. But we have been super busy (got job news, moving house news and all kinds of good food news to tell you all), but… let’s just say that we are currently swamped. However, we don’t want you to be sad and miss us, so here is a photo (it’s terrible – sorry – it was taken from a moving vehicle) of Berlin’s TV Tower in green for St Patrick’s Day. I hope you like it and I hope you all drank lots of green beer and partied like a leprechaun. We will be back soon…

    Amazing milkshake!

My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard… Yeah, yeah, I know. I hate that song too. But before I tell you about the amazing milkshake, check out these crocuses. It’s a sign of spring and they are currently everywhere. I need to get my camera out and get some nice shots quick! So, with the joy that spring brings, we have been going on walks around our area. And after one of these wanderings, we felt thirsty. A few weeks back I went to Two and Two café, which was okay. It’s been hyped up in this blog post but if I am honest, the hot chocolate was…

    3 years since the Tsunami…

Time flies… I still can’t believe it’s been three years. Times goes by so quickly. I still remember waking up that morning. I was on late-shift and I woke up before my alarm went off. Half-asleep, I looked at my phone and saw a news alert from the BBC: ‘Earthquake hits Japan’. Earthquakes happen in Japan all the time and I experienced a few tiny little ones, but still, for the BBC to tell me something was up… it sounded serious. I wandered downstairs and put on the news. The images I saw were horrific. The oncoming tsunami, houses floating out to sea, buildings on fire… you all saw them…

A trip to Dresden – The Christmas Markets

You can never see too many Christmas Markets… So, the main reason we chose to travel to Dresden is that it’s only a couple of hours from Berlin and we had been told by many Germans that the Christmas Markets there really were something special. And they were not wrong. Dresden is a small town with mostly cobbled streets. The markets are in every corner. Choirs sing next to the ice rink. There are so many different markets here within walking space, it’s quite lucky if you are only in town for a couple of days. The Romantic Market is a little quieter. The oldest market in Germany is more…

A trip to Dresden – the angels!

I’m loving angels instead… When I was a little girl (read: teenager), my wall was covered in posters. There was literally not a single space of wallpaper to be seen. I won’t go into the content (Boyzone/ Take That/ Peter Andre… ahem…) but I also had a framed poster on my wall. It was the two famous angels painted by Raphael. I have always loved angels and when I heard the original was in Dresden, well… it would be rude not to go and look at it. Especially as it hung above my head for so many years. Little did I know, the Sistine Madonna was actually a very large…
