Egg-cellent

And I said what about Breakfast at Tiffany’s?
Life this year has been work work work. And then a bit of work besides. It’s been really tough. I have missed two weddings, one hen party, countless evenings with friends and expensive concert tickets. I can’t even remember the last time I was awake enough to have breakfast. My days involve sleepily dashing to work and snacking on some old bread or a bit of cake.
breakfast on the balconyI need a break. My body needs a break before it actually breaks and that was what our practice week in Berlin was all about: great amounts of sleep and balcony breakfasts. And it was worth it: we would fill the table to the brim with cheeses, breads, brötchen, pâté, fruit and tomatoes. Not forgetting the boiled eggs. This is a tradition that goes back to when I was a child and my family would visit my German grandmother in what we like to call “the village”. Oma always made boiled eggs for breakfast, so it has now become a German tradition.
So during our mini break, breakfast quickly became my most favourite meal. Instead of dreading waking up, I would awake refreshed and excited for the feast that was about to happen. I will admit (but only to you) that sometimes breakfast happened at 4pm, but I digress…
The weather also concurred and gave us brilliant sunshine. Some days it was too hot to sit out for long without sun cream. It was bliss. I cannot remember being so unstressed. Working in news is hard work and non-stop. I don’t really have normal working hours, when something happens my suitcase is always waiting to be picked up and dragged to the airport. I never go anywhere without my passport and I can never totally relax.

Now I am ready to grab my suitcase and run to Berlin. And then it all just stops. No more stress. No more on-call. No more waiting for that phone call about breaking news. For the first time in nearly three years I can turn off my phone. No more daily newspapers and news programmes. It’s time to give my body the break it wants and now desperately needs.
Sadly, now the holiday is over and I’m back at work. I knew it would only be a matter of time, but I was surprised how quickly I slipped back into the non-breakfast person I was. Luckily, I am only employed until the end of this month – Soon I will be eating those boiled eggs daily and sitting in the sunshine enjoying the breads, cheeses and glorious nommy things Germany has to offer. I can’t wait. And my stomach can’t either.
