Green Tea Cheesecake

You say tomato… I say CHEESECAKE!
So due to our continuous love and desire to find the best cheesecake in Berlin, once again we have done some research. This place is Jason’s current favourite, so take note people!
Today we are going to go Japanese on you. Jason and I both lived in Japan for many years and so we obviously have a bit of an obsession with Japanese food. And that includes matcha (green tea), whether the drink or the flavour of ice cream. Some of our Japanese friends here mentioned that the matcha cheesecake at Mamecha was a bit epic, so off we went.
photo(1)I have to say, I’m not convinced of the cheesecake part of the cake but the green tea part is actually amazing. It’s like taking a bite of matcha powder and inhaling it. Absolutely beautiful. There is no skimping on the amount of tea they use. Matcha is expensive stuff, even more so outside of Japan, so for a little cake to have such a strong and intense flavour is rare and hence also lucky.
So, to the cake: it’s very creamy and moreish, so it’s hard not to eat it really quickly instead of savouring each mouthful. It doesn’t taste cheesey at all. There are white chocolate shavings on the top (my favourite chocolate colour) and the plate is adorable. The selection of typical Japanese teas is immense and very delicious, which is also reflected in the price, but it feels like you are indulging in something special. It’s like a treat!
For those of you interested, it had no base at all to speak of. So I am still looking for the perfect cheesecake with a cruncy base. Ah well… back to reseaching. Suggestions always welcome. It’s a hard life, but I guess someone has to do it – haha!
