The Colour Run

Run for your life…
1After seeing a lot of photos on facebook of friends who have taken part in the Colour Run this summer, we knew we also wanted to get involved. What can be more fun than running while people throw colour at you?
Luckily we found a race in our town. The run went around the Olympic stadium in the west of Berlin. There were over 3000 people all huddling together for warmth. It was cold. And foggy. And rainy. A typical English day some might say…
To keep hydrated, people were drinking beers. To keep the hunger away, sausages were being consumed. In order to keep warm, we had mulled wine. It was 9am. Please don’t judge us! This is the German way after all, we were just trying to fit in.
The build up to the start was great fun. There was music and warm-up activities. We collected our white T-shirts and got in line. Every runner received a packet of colour, ours was pink, and when the gun fired, indicating the beginning of the race, everyone threw their colour into the air and we were off…
photo 2The costumes were hilarious. We saw 5 wedding dresses that were definitely no longer white. Tutu skirts and clothing typically seen at hen parties were worn here mostly by men. Some people wore surgical masks to keep from inhaling the colour. Almost everyone had on sunglasses to keep it out of our eyes. Spectators cheered us along, laughing at our appearance. We even saw two foxes running alongside us.
For the first kilometre we ran without much excitement. It was nice just to be moving, especially as it was so cold. Then came the colour stations. Volunteers were on hand to throw the colour at us. Blue, yellow, green, pink… one after the other. We got battered. In our ears, down our shirts, in our hair. And we giggled and giggled and giggled. It was a colourful mess. When we arrived at the yellow station we had realised the best way to get covered is to run on one of the sides and twist your body. By the end of it we were happily exhausted and colourful. It was by far the most fun I have ever had running and I cannot recommend it more!
