Gallery Den

I see a red door and I want it painted black…
photo 1Last night we were hungry and had no plans, so, enticed by free Japanese food, we popped into an opening event at Gallery Den, opened three years ago by the delightful Tomoko. She has lived in Germany for over 25 years and it was surreal to speak to someone from Japan in the German language.
photo 3Gallery Den displays contemporary art by Japanese artists. The current exhibition is a collection from various artists in Japan who asked for their work to be shown in Germany. Apparently not all artists want their work displayed everywhere in the world, so we were lucky these artists wanted to show their work in Berlin. My favourite painting was an acrylic painting purely in Gold of Mount Fuji by Yugen Palace, a steal at just 150000 yen (~€1150).

photo 2The exhibition includes wall scrolls, calligraphy and paintings of scenes from inside and outside of Japan. Over sushi and wine and with classical violin music being played in the background (what better way to open a gallery?) we met various artists from all over the world. One couple, the lady from Japan and the man from England, had met in Barcelona and spoke to each other in Spanish. They are currently building their own house in Berlin. Another young Japanese lady came from the same rural town where I spent three years. It’s a tiny world. Our opera-singing friend was worrying about an upcoming concert in Vienna. An amazing mix of people you would only find in the art scene.
It seems art is everywhere here in Berlin, so go out and have a look. There is definitely something for everyone to enjoy.
