    Random things in Vienna

You’re my Wonderwall… I love wandering. We often (actually every day this week) go walkies around our area in Berlin and love showing people the farm, the lakes, the forests, the amazing houses, the Botanical Gardens… there is so much to see just in our little area, so it’s only reasonable to say that in the city of Vienna we found lots of interesting things on our walks around the city. I love posts like this – random, full of silly stuff and fast to throw together but fun to remember seeing all these weird and wonderful bits and pieces!

Vienna Day Five – Last Day :(

My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard… We had seen a massive queue for a tiny little ice cream shop on Sunday, but there must’ve been about forty people in line. I’m English, so I love a good queue, but that’s too much even for me. However, a holiday isn’t a holiday without ice cream, so on Monday morning, we went to see what the fuss was all about. There was no one in line at Eis Greissler and we got a single scoop in a cone for €1.50. Now I know why everyone was waiting in line… O… M… G… WOW! We nearly went back for another…

    Vienna Day Four

Let it go, let it go… There wasn’t meant to be a Vienna Day Four, we planned to go to Budapest and the hot springs for the last two days, but the train was so expensive in the end that it didn’t seem worth it and with the stress of maybe missing a train and then our flight… well, we were wanting a holiday, so instead we booked another night in Vienna and took it easy. It meant we had time to go a little further out of the city centre to see the Palace. A trip to Vienna would not be complete without seeing the Schönbrunn Palace. I haven’t…

    Vienna's Boardgame Shops

Another trip and another visit to the local game stores. While in Vienna, we decided to check out the local game stores to see if they had any interesting/fun/new games. We seem to have developed a tradition now wherever we travel — picking up at least 1 new game as a little souvenir. This trip was no different! First on our gaming tour was: Damage Unlimited Games Center The store was easily found just off the main high-street and is packed FULL of every kind of board, card or roleplaying game you can think of. There were several rooms each dedicated to a different aspect of the gaming hobby like a…

    Vienna – Day Three

Gimme more, Gimme more! After yet another very lazy morning (we are on holiday after all!), we wandered over to Kunsthaus Wien, Hundertwasser’s museum. I remember all those years ago finding this treasure and having to go inside the museum to experience more. I’ve actually written all about the artist before, when we visited Magdeburg – so feel free to check it out there. Otherwise, just look at these stunning photos and put it on your list of places you absolutely cannot miss when visiting Vienna, however it was a lot more run-down then I remember. It felt like it needed a good old lick of paint. Then it was time…

Vienna Day Two – AKA the day we had two dinners…

I just can’t get enough… We went to see my family’s Stolpersteine (‘stumbling stones‘) in the morning – these are golden squares that are placed outside buildings commemorating victims of the holocaust – a memorial to those who were killed. My family history is super complicated and bizarre, even I often forget how everyone is connected with all these different cultures, religions and people, but I love being a mix of so many different people that struggled to find acceptance in society. I am in the middle of a post about my Jewish history, so check back soon to read that and I will go into more detail of these…

What to do and eat in Vienna – Day One

“Be’Teavon” (= Hebrew), “Es gezunderheyt” (= Yiddish), “Guten Appetit” (= German)! I’ve been to Vienna many times now. The first time was with my father – he still loves telling people the story: When I was about 13, I did the whole city by myself while he was at a conference and then in the evenings I would guide him around the amazing places I had found. I’ve since been here for work (Japanese media related conferences) and this time my brother Mark had a conference in the city and he got us a nice big apartment in the city centre on AirBnB, so off we went! Of course we to…
