Vienna Day Two – AKA the day we had two dinners…

I just can’t get enough…
We went to see my family’s Stolpersteine (‘stumbling stones‘) in the morning – these are golden squares that are placed outside buildings commemorating victims of the holocaust – a memorial to those who were killed.
My family history is super complicated and bizarre, even I often forget how everyone is connected with all these different cultures, religions and people, but I love being a mix of so many different people that struggled to find acceptance in society. I am in the middle of a post about my Jewish history, so check back soon to read that and I will go into more detail of these stones and my personal link to them. For now, I will just show you the two golden stones outside their previous home.

Next we went to Demel – a super posh cafe for high tea. It was very quaint and very busy. We joined the queue, but we were lucky to wait only about ten minutes. We had a nice, relaxed sit down and the famous Sache Torte. It was good, but not amazing. Jason gave it three stars, so… yeah. The milk-custard-thing in the background was recommended by the waitress. I don’t recommend it. Here’s the famous Sache Torte for those of you who don’t know:

I wanted to go to heaven – in Vienna it’s known as Am Himmel (‘in heaven’), which is a viewpoint of the city on a hilltop. We caught the tram to Grinzing and then the bus to the top of the hill. The views were lovely and it’s such a nice wander. At the top you find a kind of Stone Henge, where instead of stones, trees are placed in a circle. Each tree corresponds to a few calendar weeks. My tree was an Apple Tree – and I love apples! Apparently this also means I’m tolerant, flexible, ready-to-help and I like flirting – haha! There’s a great playground up there too with swings and slides. I cannot recommend this place more – it was absolutely silent, no tourists and beautiful. You must all go here!

Lastly and most importantly, the dinner. My brother Mark has been to the vineyard area before and said it was the most amazing dinner ever. We grabbed the bus back down to the little town at the bottom of the hill and we literally just copied his past trip and even ate at the same place: Liebstöckl. We ordered our meal and it was divine and came with a litre of local wine.

And because we are fatties, we then made the waiter laugh by ordering ribs as a dessert. We did think about ordering a second dessert (more ribs), but we got a bit embarrassed. They were absolutely the best thing I’ve eaten here yet. Two dinners in one day – that’s my kinda day! No wonder I’m still so full haha! We paid €30 each for the entire meal, but it was an amazing price for what we got. I’m getting hungry just thinking about it – and we might have to go there again tomorrow for more ribs 😉
