Teufelsberg in Berlin

The hills are alive…
Autumn this year is just one big sunshine hit. It’s wonderful. Every day it is getting a little colder but the sun blazes through warming us up as we continue to discover the great outdoors of this city. I’ve wanted to go to Teufelsberg [Devil’s Hill] in the West of Berlin for ages now and we finally made it! Although the plan had been to go and check out the whole historical part of the hills, we actually just ended up going on a hike/ walk through the Grunewald to see the view of Berlin.

After WWII, 70% of Berlin had been reduced to rubble. This meant there was rubbish everywhere. So in order to clear some space, this was put next to the Teufelssee [Devil’s Lake]. Slowly the mounds became higher and higher and created these hills. What’s unique about these hills is that underneath all this rubble is a military-technical college for Nazis. They had tried to blow up the college, but it was so difficult that in the end they just put all this rubbish on the top to hide it.
There are so many different routes to get to the top, you just need to find a pathway and go for it. I was surprised at how many people there were just lying in the sunshine, walking their dogs and flying kites. The views of Berlin are okay – I would say the views of the forest have a much bigger wow-factor. You can see Berlin in the distance and it was such a clear day we could see all the way to the Oberbaum Bridge in the East, where part of the Berlin Wall still stands.
Here are some pics of our little adventure. Highly recommended for a wander outside the city – just watch out for the wild boars that roam the forest!
