Hüco Stoffe – Fabric Store in Berlin

Any place that advertises itself as having 200,000 meters of fabric is going to be able to provide us all with something we absolutely love. Hüco Stoffe in Berlin is HUGE – it’s a bit hidden away in the North-West of the city, but well-worth a visit if you need any kind of sewing accessories.
A friend had advised me to go with an idea of what I wanted before I ended up melting in a puddle of happiness at the beautiful colours and material and glittery things and buttons and and and… so I went on the hunt for some cotton material for a dress I am currently making and some white cotton material for a shirt for Jason.

The place has everything from courdroy, satin, sequins and lace to velvet, linin and cotton mixes. The staff were extremely knowledgeable and helpful (very rare in Berlin) and there was a constant stream of customers, even on a Monday morning – at the weekends this place must be rammed! It was lovely to touch the different textures and dream of all the material I want – this is apparently how Jason feels in a boardgame shop – haha. Each roll of fabric has the content (eg: percentage of cotton), washing instructions and price attached to it. It’s not as cheap as the Maybachufer Market, where the turkish lads sell a meter for around three euros, but the range and choice of material, as well as the quality is much better. I spent around 10 euros per meter – so it’s good if you know exactly how much fabric you need and what your budget is before you go – as you can end up spending lots extra here. What I did like was the categories would be cotton or satin etc and then you can choose the same colour but at different cost, so there’s something for all budgets.
Anyway, back to my trip! I have SO MANY dresses with dots on, that I’d made up my mind not to buy anything polka-dotted. That didn’t stop me from gazing longingly at the various colourful circles. I found some great tartan material for my next trip (thinking a skirt would be great).

I also got a Great Britain print, which I used for making my sewing machine cover. And then, because I wanted a dress in green, I got this material, which I’m totally in love with. It’s 100% cotton and so soft to touch. I’ve designed the pattern for my dress and have begun to cut up the pieces but I’m so nervous! I shall let you all know once it’s completed – hope it fits!!
