A trip to Dresden – The Milk Shop

Milking it…
Okay, okay. It is just a milk shop. But in my defence I would like to tell you all that it is the most beautiful milk shop in the world. Yes, it is official. It was named so in 1997 by the Guinness Book of World Records.
I was intrigued. Even though I’m generally not the biggest fan of milk, I like visiting quirky and extraordinary things whilst on holiday, so we had a little look. I was not disappointed.

The Dresdner Mölkerei is stunning! It was built over 130 years ago and even survived the war. It was the first place in Germany to produce condensed milk and they introduced pasteurisation in 1900.
On the walk up there we came across coach after coach full to the brim with tourists. It seemed half of Germany was packed into this little shop. The walls are covered in hand-painted tiles and really are something you need to experience. It’s such a tiny shop but it leaves a lovely memory.
IMG_2264The typical milk related products are on sale, from chocolate to cheese. Jams and soaps adorned the shop front. And then you can buy a glass of milk. This is what the place is famous for, so it would be rude not to try. I will be honest here, it was horrible. Really horrible. I tried to gulp it down quickly and then go for a second try, just to make sure but my taste-buds were having none of it. Jason actually finished it off for me. I guess it is an acquired taste, something that is worth trying of course, but maybe get one per group, to make sure someone actually wants to drink it. And if not, they sold mulled wine, which helped wash the taste down nicely, thank you very much.
