A trip to Dresden – The Christmas Markets

You can never see too many Christmas Markets…
So, the main reason we chose to travel to Dresden is that it’s only a couple of hours from Berlin and we had been told by many Germans that the Christmas Markets there really were something special. And they were not wrong.
Dresden is a small town with mostly cobbled streets. The markets are in every corner. Choirs sing next to the ice rink.
IMG_2250There are so many different markets here within walking space, it’s quite lucky if you are only in town for a couple of days. The Romantic Market is a little quieter. The oldest market in Germany is more traditional and has chocolate shaped tools sold by craftspeople in old-fashioned outfits alongside jugglers. There are plenty of normal markets, where you can buy the usual tack and others where you can get the famous Dresdener Stollen cake and little ornaments.

Instead of getting some chips (also known as ‘fries‘ for those of you across the pond), I opted for an entire potato sliced on a stick. It was so good I actually went back to get another one. And then everyone else did too. I have only seen these once in Berlin, so it is worth going to Dresden to get these. Go go go!

IMG_2374The mulled wine is delicious, but I wouldn’t say it is any different from the markets in the rest of the country. The typical fun fair rides are there too and tall Christmas trees adorn the city. There was even a huge advent calender!
I guess there was only one other thing that really stood out: if you are really lucky, you might see the Coca Cola Truck. Yup, that’s right. On our way back home we wandered past a huge crowd of excited people taking photos in front of the truck. I think for some people in our group it was their favourite part of the trip. Haha!
