The Spreewald

You’re beautiful…
After deciding to stay at the ridiculous pickled gherkin barrel accommodation, we had to find something to do in the local area of the Spreewald. Luckily, there are lots of things to choose from and it’s a stunning area to check out just one hour outside of Berlin.
The main town is Luebbenau and it’s small enough to walk everywhere. This UNESCO area is full of lakes, forests and canals. Bike rental is available on every corner and there are ample bike lanes and routes to choose from. You absolutely cannot leave without being punted on the canals. It was lovely just floating slowly along the water. The trip lasts three hours with a break of around an hour for lunch and costs 12 euros each. We were still full from breakfast, so we went to the Cucumber Museum – not very interesting, but there are some fun pickled recipes to look at and plenty of tasting opportunities of all kinds of pickled cucumbers. They even vote in a cucumber queen every year – so if that’s your dream, it’s time to get involved!
Anyway, back to the boat (or Kahnfahrt auf Deutsch)! The captain has beers on board and stops off randomly at tiny little huts so you can get some local pickled gherkin delicacies on the boat. My brother said they were more than delicious, so give them a try if you’re in the area.

We also took a dip in the lakes in Hindenberger See, just ten minutes drive from Luebbenau and there we had dinner at the Kartoffelnest – apparently potatoes are massively delicious and famous in the region and my jacket potato with huge chunky salmon bits was amazing. It’s literally on the beach next to the lakes, so it’s a perfect location for a swim and a bite to eat. We have no photos as we left the camera in the car so we didn’t need to watch our stuff from the water, but believe me – it’s just lovely 🙂
And while you’re there, look out for the adorable electricity boxes painted with fun cucumbers!
