Christmas Presents

Dear Santa, please bring me…
I have to say this year was pretty amazing for presents. I will let you in on a little secret. My dream home has a red kitchen, wooden floors and a record player in the corner. It has now officially come true.
photo 2 photoAs kids, my parents played non-typical music at home. The Bhundu Boys from Africa were probably most-played throughout our childhood. Click on the link – it’s just beautiful music! We would wiggle our bottoms and stand on our father’s feet while we danced around the living room for hours. We were so happy when we were finally old and mature enough to be able to touch the record player and turn over the records. When African sounds were taking a rest, South African music played alongside ABBA and Cat Stevens or Simon and Garfunkel.

Then along came cassettes and CDs and the record player was put in the loft. It never came back out. However, last week, the records did come out of the attic. That’s because for Xmas, Jason got me a record player. It’s absolutely gorgeous – it comes in a black and white suitcase and looks very at home in our living room! OMG I LOVE IT – it’s probably one of the absolutely best presents I have ever received. I’m now listening to the Bhundu Boys, Cat Stevens and even some records that belonged to my grandmother! The sound is so beautiful, I don’t think there will be any need for us to renew our Spotify Account ever again.

It’s beautiful! I’ve been thinking of getting one for Christopher too. I have a very similar memory to yours: my dad used to play this Fiddlers on the Roof album and my sister and I would dance around the room. What a joy it must have been to grow up to Bhundu Boys!

I cannot recommend it enough – seriously I LOVE it! I feel like nowadays people don’t grow up dancing to music like we did, which is such a shame. It’s lovely how every single person who comes to visit us also gets a trip down memory lane and remembers old songs. One friend has even said she will grab the old records of her parent’s in the attic and bring them to us so she can listen all over again. It’s magical and makes me so happy, especially when I imagine my grandparents dancing away to the same record I’m dancing to. Amazing 🙂

Mum used to have a record player. I’d play this Disney one with Mary Poppins and other film music on it.
I’d love to have the kind of living space where I can build up cool collections of things like this.

Seriously, it’s a tiny little suitcase! I can’t recommend it enough – people said to me already that it’s best to buy an old record player and an expensive one blablabla… this one works perfectly, can easily be put away and is so absolutely beautiful! And records don’t take up a lot of space either – do it lady! It’s so wonderful! And I LOVE Disney music – I shall have a lookout on Ebay for a record for when you visit us 🙂
