Go (Outside on a Rainy Day)

It’s no secret to anyone that I love playing boardgames. I will usually never pass up the opportunity to sit down around a table with some nice people and put our minds together over some fun, interative game. (By the way, if I do decline a game invite then I’d recommend calling an ambulance as I may well be very sick). Of all the games I have played and enjoyed, nothing compares to my love for the game of Go. Known as Igo (囲碁) in Japan, Baduk (바둑) in Korea or Weiqi (圍棋) in China, it is one of the oldest boardgames in existence and, in my humble opinion, the greatest.…

    Board Gaming in New York

Whenever we go travelling, we always make sure that we eat our way through the town. Food is definitely main factor we consider when planning our any trip. As you’ve already read, we definitely worked hard to cover all bases while in New York! However, no trip is complete without a little visit to the area’s (friendly) local game store. New York is definitely a fantastic place to explore as a gamer — with tonnes of locations to geek out in – and we managed to squeeze a visit to two stores during our limited time there. The Compleat Strategist The first store was “The Compleat Strategist“. The store is less than a…

    Vienna's Boardgame Shops

Another trip and another visit to the local game stores. While in Vienna, we decided to check out the local game stores to see if they had any interesting/fun/new games. We seem to have developed a tradition now wherever we travel — picking up at least 1 new game as a little souvenir. This trip was no different! First on our gaming tour was: Damage Unlimited Games Center The store was easily found just off the main high-street and is packed FULL of every kind of board, card or roleplaying game you can think of. There were several rooms each dedicated to a different aspect of the gaming hobby like a…

    Boardgaming in Amsterdam

Our flight to Japan first took us via Amsterdam where we had several hours to waste before our connecting flight. I had never been to Amsterdam before and Vanessa suggested we pop into the city to have a look around. She has been several times with work in the past and knew exactly where to take us (which is quite the role reversal as I am usually the one guiding Vanessa around!) We walked around the town and she mentioned that she visited a nice local boardgame store during a previous visit and that we should go check it out again. Obviously I was very excited. We found it straight away…

    Quoridor

Today I’d like to introduce you to a fun little board game that is incredibly easy to learn and plays in less than 5 minutes but still manages to offer immense depth and room for strategy. That game is Quoridor. Which I assume is how ducks would pronounce Corridor if they could speak. The game is for 2-4 players (best with 2) and played on a 9×9 grid. The aim is to be the first person to move your piece from one side of the board to the opposite. The moment you do so, you win! The rules of the game are so simple that they can be explained in just a couple…
